At 8.30pm on 24th March, Christians in Selkirk gathered by candlelight in the Parish Church Hall to celebrate Earth Hour, with music, songs, prayers, poems and lighting candles to express concern for the earth. During the service, we had the chance to sign bottle-shaped petitions to Roseanna Cunningham, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform at the Scottish Government to show our support for the “Have you got the bottle” campaign. This campaign is to introduce deposit returns on drinks bottles and cans to help reduce unsightly and damaging waste. Our concern has to show itself in action.
We posted our signed letters into a 2 litre plastic bottle – a good reminder of the reason for signing. It was delivered to Jenni Hume from “Have you got the bottle?” at Eco-Congregation Scotland’s Annual Gathering on 22nd April. We were delighted to see the bottle being used as a visual aid on Jenni’s stall. We’ve labelled it for posting to Roseanna Cunningham, MSP and look forward to receiving a response.
